The last post on Lynette’s amazing projects made me think about my first baby quilt, the one I’ve done for Maylea over four years ago.

All started from the beautiful Red Rooster Fabric panel named ‘Happily ever after’. I really think it is the perfect name for this kind of present 🙂

This is a really simple quilt, without complex patterns or decorations but, considering that it is one of my first works and that I’m still a beginner, I am quite proud of the result.

As you can see in picture (not so clear I am afraid) we will have 3 frames around the bigger scene of the panel used as a central.
The first frame is a red and white striped cotton thin band, the second is coloured, thicker and made using  the 4 small scenes from the panel as corner blocks, the last one is exactly like the first and it is the final binding of the quilt.

The structure is made of 3 strips of 5 rectangles each, combined with 2 central bands. As you can see in the scheme below we have two strips made of: small panel + band + rectangle + band + small panel and a bigger one which is: rectangle + band + central panel + band + rectangle.
Once joined the pieces in the three strips you have to combine them together adding the last two bands (step two of the scheme). All the bands have the same width so once combined they made the central frame. If, as in my case, your conjunction seams are not precise you can cover them adding some applique, stars and hearts always work fine.

Now you will need to add padding and back side and quilt as you like. For a really easy quilt you can just sew all around the nine rectangles. I’ve tried to hand quilt the blanket, as you can see my stitches are quite big and not so precise but I loved make this quilt and I’m sure it was an appreciate gift, so 🙂

Last step, bind your quilt and personalize it with the name of the new born, you can work with embroidery or appliqué or even fabric paint.

Scrivere il post su Lynette e i suoi stupendi progetti mi ha fatto ripensare alle mie prime trapunte. In particolare ad una, quella che ho regalato ai genitori di Maylea per il suo arrivo, ormai 4 anni fa.

Tutto nasce da ‘Happily ever after’ questo bellissimo pannello di stoffa della Red Rooster Fabrics. Con un nome così coma si fa a non pensare di regalarlo 🙂

La trapunta in se era molto semplice, niente decorazioni particolarmente difficili o lunghe da realizzare. L’effetto finale è quello di una tripla cornice sul  centrale del pannello: la prima sottile rossa e bianca, la seconda più alta, dai colori tenui, che riprende nei quattro angoli i 4 riquadri piccoli del pannello e l’ultima, di rifinitura, che riprende la prima.

Il realtà si tratta di 3 fasce da 5 rettangoli ciascuna, unite da due strisce centrali.
Il montaggio infatti prevede la realizzazione di tre strisce, due composte da: pannello piccolo + striscia di separazione + rettangolo colorato (bianco nello schema qui sotto) + striscia + pannello piccolo ed una composta da rettangolo colorato + striscia + pannello centrale + striscia + rettangolo.

Una volta realizzate le tre fasce le si combina insieme intervallandole da due strisce di separazione. Le strisce di separazione sono tutte alte uguali ed una volta unite vanno a formare la cornice più interna. Se, come nel mio caso, i vostri angoli di congiunzione non sono proprio precisi potete andare ad aggiungere degli appliqué ottenendo il doppio vantaggio di nascondere le imperfezioni e animare la vostra trapunta. Io ho applicato con dei punti a vista stelle e cuori in colori a contrasto.

Terminato il fronte della vostra coperta non resta che aggiungere imbottitura e retro, nel mio caso un cotone fantasia, e procedere con la trapuntatura secondo il metodo che preferite. Volendo potete anche solo ripassare a macchina i contorni dei 9 rettangoli, in modo da fissare i tre strati del lavoro; io ho provato a trapuntare a mano, il risultato come potete vedere non è perfetto, i punti sono grandi e non proprio precisissimi. Sono certa comunque che il regalo sia stato apprezzato nonostante (o forse soprattutto per) le imperfezioni che l’hanno reso più mio ed assolutamente unico.Tutto sommato sono felice del risultato soprattutto considerando che sono ancora alle prime armi 🙂

Terminata la trapuntatura non resterà che bordare la coperta e, se vi piace l’idea, personalizzarla con il nome del nuovo nato. Potete scegliere tra: ricamo, tecnica applique, pittura con i colori per la stoffa o qualsiasi altra tecnica vi ispiri.
