An old jacket with the lining falling apart is perfect if you want to try something new as lining!

This is something I’ve never done before, I’ve worked on skirt but never on dresses or jackets. I can assure you I am a patch girl! Especially when things seems to be complicated. But this is the perfect time to try something new, if not now, when?!

So, here I am, looking at my old green velvet jacket with some worries (actually, at this moment the jacket is looking at me from the chair and it looks good 🙂 ).

It is the classic velvet jacket, perfect with a pair of jeans and a black turtleneck ​sweater! It makes you feel so intellectualm 😉 I love it.
Than one day, the drama, you’re trying to reach something and you hear that sound ‘STRAP’.. Ok, don’t worry it is not so bad, just a little rip, go on! But then this first small rip became bigger and a second one appear and maybe a third. So your beloved jacked never left the wardrobe again. But today, is the day! We will give it a new life 🙂

So, what I’ve done:

I’ve taken away the old lining observing how it was fixed. Then I used the pieces of the old one to make the model for the new lining. I’ve drawn the pieces on the new fabric paying attention to the right and wrong sides.

I really want a visible and particular lining so I choose this black fabric with small white stamps of old bikers. Love it!

I’ve put together the new lining following the model, basted it, tried it on, then sewn it in one piece. Once done I’ve sewed the lining to the jacket on the wrong side, all the lining except for the wrists. Then turned the jacket inside out using one of the wrist open.

I don’t think this is the correct way to do it but it worked. I’ve hand stitched the wrist and..done!
It is not perfect, the lining It’s a little big and I really have to improve my hand stitch but, It’s done. After years, it is finally done and this is quite a satisfaction.

After the lining I’ve also changed the buttons of the jacket. This is something I do often. You cannot imagine how different is a jacket with new buttons on. It is something so easy but also so rewarding. This time I choose some clay buttons that my parents bring me from Ireland love the irregular shape and the colours.

Una vecchia giacca con la fodera ormai a pezzi è la scusa perfetta per cimentarsi con un nuovo progetto: rifoderare!

Non mi ero mai lanciata nel cambio fodera, tanto meno di una giacca. Diciamolo la mia vera natura è il rattoppo! Soprattutto quando le cose si fanno complicate. Ma se non sfrutto questo periodo per mettermi alla prova. Insomma, se non ora, quando?!

Così eccomi qua, a guardare con un certo timore la mia giacca di velluto verde (ok, mentre scrivo è lei che mi guarda dalla sedia e tutto è andato per il meglio 🙂 ).

E’ una di quelle giacche che, come le indossi, ti fanno sentire più intellettuale, lei, un paio di jeans e un dolcevita nero.. Perfetta!
Poi un giorno, il dramma, ti allunghi per prendere qualcosa e senti quell’ inconfondibile suono ‘STRAP’.. Acci, la fodera, va bhe, è solo in un punto sotto la spalla, non si vede nemmeno. Si puo’ ancora mettere!
Poi, sapete come va, gli STRAP diventano due ( o anche tre) di dimensioni sempre più importanti e allora la giacca rimane li, sola, nell’armadio.

Ma da oggi non più!! Da oggi torna in piena forma! Si, insomma, la fodera non è proprio cucita alla perfezione ma ha sicuramente più carisma!

Vi racconto cos’ho fatto?

Ho eliminato la vecchia fodera, l’ho scucita con attenzione cercando di capire come era stata inserita e da lei ho ricavato il modello per la nuova.
Ho copiato le varie sezioni del modello sulla stoffa scelta per la nuova fodera prestando attenzione a dritti e rovesci.

Volevo che la nuova fodera fosse visibile, che risaltasse insomma così ho scelto una stoffa fantasia in un colore a contrasto, nello specifico nera con stampati dei piccoli motociclisti anni 30 in bianco. L’ho adorata appena l’ho vista!

Ho rimesso insieme le varie parti della fodera come da modello originale e le ho imbastite. Una volta verificato che le dimensioni fossero corrette l’ho cucita e ho fissato la fodera alla giacca, cucendo tutto a rovescio tranne i polsi. Ho usato le aperture sui polsi per rigirare la giacca ed il più era fatto!

Ora, non credo che questo sia proprio il suggerimento dei manuali di cucito ma ha funzionato abbastanza bene. Ho dovuto cucire a mano solo i polsi, tutte le cuciture a vista sono risultate ben rifinite.

Mi ripromettevo di cambiare questa fodera da anni, non sarà perfetta ma è fatta, per me è già una bella soddisfazione!

Oltre alla fodera ho voluto fare un’altra piccola modifica alla giacca, questa si è una cosa che faccio spesso, ho sostituito i vecchi bottoni di plastica con dei bellissimi bottoni di terracotta che i miei genitori mi avevano portato da un viaggio in Irlanda. Cambiare i bottoni può’ sembrare banale ma da ai vestiti tutto un altro sapore 🙂
