Make a pillowcase is one of the first thing you do once you have a sewing machine. Maybe because it’s simple, but also because it is something that can help you change things and spaces. I’ve done pillows for garden and balcony, for sofa or bed. I’ve filled them with plumage, padding, cherry seeds, polystyrene.

Maybe I will tell you about all my experimets but today I want to show you this pattern. I’ve done it in a few hours thanks to the great video tutorial of Missouri Star Quilt Company . I really love their videos they are simple and clear, really well done and funny. Also they teach a lot of ‘tricks’ helping you save time.

This project is easier than how it seems. I have collected here below the main passages but I think the video at the bottom of the post is much more fun. 🙂

We will need: basic sewing kit and fabrics in different colours or patterns (make sure you can wash them together) I used cotton.

A) Starting with two squares of the same sizes but different colours, pin them right side to right side and sew all the edges. Now, cut one of the two square along the diagolas making sure to not cut the second square. Open the triangles and iron them flat. Can you see the magic? We have another square, bigger than before. Mesure it, cut a second square of the same size (but different in colours), pin it to your work (right side to right side), cut it on the diagonals, open, iron, do it again, and again, until you reach the size you need! Love it!

B) I’ve done this three times for each block using the same colours but in a different order. 4 blocks for each side, 8 blocks in total. Once you have the four blocks sew them together and, if necessary add a bundle.

B1) If you want you can make one big block for each side. In this way you will not have to put blocks together so you can skip directly from point A) to point C). 

C) Sew together the two sides (right side to right side) leaving an open and revers your pillowcase. Fill it and close the open with little stitches.

Done! Admire your work 🙂

Rifare la fodera ad un vecchio cuscino è una delle prime cose che si prova a fare quando si ha tra le mani una macchina da cucire. Sarà per questo, sarà perché è un modo semplice per cambiare faccia alle cose, ma a me rifare i cuscini piace moltissimo!
Ne ho fatti da interno e da esterno, grandi, piccoli, piccolissimi. Li ho riempiti con noccioli di ciliegia, piume, imbottitura o palline di polistirolo. Chissà magari piano piano vi racconterò di tutti i miei esperimenti, ma oggi mi concentro su questo. Realizzato in qualche ora. Lo direste?
Il merito è del video tutorial di Missouri Star Quilt Company che trovate qui . In generale amo i loro video, sono chiari e ben fatti, ma questo l’ho trovato illuminante!

Cosa vi serve: kit da cucito base e stoffa in fantasie diverse ma accostabili. Io ho usato il cotone. L’accortezza è sempre quella di scegliere stoffe che possano essere lavate assieme, che non stingano e che siano già state bagnate per evitare che si ritirino al primo contatto con l’acqua 🙂

La tecnica è semplice, vi riassumo i passaggi principali anche se il video è molto più divertente e non è necessario sapere l’inglese per seguirlo.

Si parte da due quadrati di stoffa (stesse dimensioni ma diverse fantasie) cuciti dritto su dritto; uno dei due si taglia poi lungo le diagonali (facendo attenzione a non incidere il secondo), si aprono i lati, si stira la nuova superficie e si riparte. Si misurano i lati del quadrato nato dalla fusione dei primi due (non è stupendo!), se ne taglia uno delle stesse dimensioni ma di una fantasia diversa, si cuce al primo dritto su dritto, si taglia lungo le diagonali, si apre, si stira e si procede così di quadrato in quadrato fino ad arrivare alla dimensione desiderata.

Nel mio caso il processo sopra è stato ripetuto 3 volte per ognuno dei blocchi che compongono la fodera. 4 blocchi per lato, 8 in tutto. Il gioco di colori è nato dall’alternanza delle stoffe. Se volete potete creare un solo blocco, grande abbastanza da coprire il lato del vostro cuscino.

Una volta creati i due lati basterà cucirli assieme dritto su dritto, lasciando un’apertura, rivoltare la fodera, inserire il cuscino o l’imbottitura e… Fatto! Non vi resta che ammirare la vostra opera!

E’ una tecnica divertente, veloce e se decidete di usarla per un regalo farete sicuramente un figurone 🙂
