For a few months now, we’ve been clearing out my grandmother’s house. The house has been empty for years, but we hadn’t felt the need or desire to clear out the closets. It’s thanks to my grandmother that I started sewing; she owned the first machine I ever threaded and used, and hers were the hands that guided my first stitches. She was a seamstress, she knitted with a passion and speed I’ll never match, and she made crocheted laces that are still masterpieces… in short, an unrivaled inspiration, a warm and affectionate memory of a person always on the move and with a project in her hands.

At her house, the room where she worked remained frozen in time until it was necessary to do some work in the house. Now that those closets have been opened, what has emerged is a mix of memories, wool, sweaters, fabrics and patterns, ideas and wonder. I’m writing you about it because sometimes I’ll tell you about what I found, how I used it or would like to use it. In short, many projects were born from there. I believe, deep down, that it was she who sent me new ideas and what to make them with 😊

The first thing I took was a pillow. An old 50×50 pillow that’s a constant memory of my childhood, the softest pillow I’d ever used. The one that ended up on my chair when it was too low to reach the table.

A pillow lined with thick green fabric, now very worn, and filled with feathers. It wasn’t a store-bought pillow, but rather one made from the leftovers of the first ones used to make winter quilts. Grandma had bought the feathers and made the quilts. I don’t know if you have any idea how complicated feathers can be, but believe me, it is.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the cushion’s initial condition, but I do have one of the finished project. It’s been a long time since I’ve sewn, and this simple project made me realize how much I’ve missed it.

The fabric is leftover from the one I’ve used for the studio. I promise to dedicate a little more time to sewing, which is always my favorite thing to do.

Da qualche mese stiamo svuotando casa della nonna. La casa è vuota ormai da anni ma non avevamo avuto voglia o necessità di liberare gli armadi. È grazie a mia nonna se ho iniziato a cucire, sua la prima macchina che abbia mai “infilato” ed usato, sue le mani che hanno guidato le mie prime cuciture. Lei era sarta, lavorava a maglia con una passione ed una velocità che io non avrò mai, realizzava pizzi all’uncinetto che sono ancora dei capolavori.. insomma, un’ispirazione irraggiungibile, un ricordo caldo e affettuoso di una personasempre in movimento e con un progetto fra le mani.

A casa sua la stanza in cui lavorava è rimasta ferma nel tempo finché non è stato necessario fare dei lavori in casa, ora che quegli armadi sono stati aperti, quello che ne è uscito è stato un misto di ricordi, lane, maglioni, stoffe e cartamodelli, spunti e meraviglia.. Ve lo racconto perché capiterà che vi parli di quello che ho trovato, di come l’ho usato o lo vorrei usare.. Insomma, tanti progetti sono nati da li.. Credo, in fondo, che sia stata lei a mandarmi nuove idee e ciò con cui realizzarle 😊

La prima cosa che mi sono portata via è stato un cuscino. Un vecchio cuscino 50×50 che è un ricordo costante nella mia infanzia, il cuscino più morbido che avessi mai usato. Quello che finiva sulla mia sedia quando, troppo bassa, non raggiungevano il tavolo.

Un cuscino foderato con una grossa stoffa verde, ormai rovinatissima, e l’interno in piume. Non un cuscino comperato, ma nato dell’avanzamento delle prime usate per fare i pimoni invernali. La nonna aveva comperato le piume e fatto i piumoni. Non so se avetebidea di quanto possa essere complicato gestire delle piume, credetemi, lo è.

Purtroppo non ho una foto delle condizioni iniziali del cuscino ma ne ho una del progetto finito.. Era tanto che non cucivo più e questo progetto così semplice mi ha fatto capire quanto mi mancasse..

La stoffa è quella avanzata dalla cameretta sempre stupenda. La promessa è di dedicare un pochino più di tempo al cucito che tra tutte le cose è sempre la mia preferita. Il modello, semplicissimo, è quello che potete vedere qui, in fondo alla pagina trovate una fotogallery con tutti i passaggi.
